What is
Baptism?

Baptism is the first sacrament of the Christian life.

Baptism is the first sacrament of the Christian life. A person is washed with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in that moment is freed from sin, given new life in God, and welcomed as a child of God into the family of the Church.

The Catechism describes it as the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door that opens the way to all the other sacraments. Everything else in the Christian life begins here.

If you are reading this because a child is on the way, or because you feel drawn to follow Christ yourself, you are asking exactly the right question. Baptism is where the journey starts.

The Catholic Sacrament Explained

WHERE DOES BAPTISM COME FROM?

Baptism is not something the Church invented. It comes from Jesus himself. He went down into the Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist, and at the end of his earthly life he sent the Apostles out to make disciples of all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). The Church has done exactly that ever since.

WHAT DOES BAPTISM DO?

Saint Paul described Baptism as dying and rising with Christ. Going down into the water is like being buried with him, and coming up is like rising to a new life (Romans 6:3-4).

In practical terms, Baptism does several things at the same time. It washes away sin, both the original sin we are all born with and, in the case of an adult, every personal sin as well. It gives new life, what Jesus called being born again of water and the Spirit (John 3:5). It makes the baptized person a child of God and a member of the Church, joined to Christ and to every other Christian. And it leaves a permanent spiritual mark, a sign that this person belongs to Christ forever.

WHY IS WATER USED

Water is the heart of the sign. The priest or deacon either pours water over the person's head or lowers them into it, while speaking the words Jesus gave us: in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Only plain, natural water is used, and those words are always spoken. Without both, it is not Baptism.

WHO CAN BE BAPTIZED?

Anyone who has not yet been baptized can receive it: newborns, children, and adults alike. The Catholic Church baptizes infants because Baptism is a gift of God's grace, not something we earn, and parents naturally long to share with their child the very life of faith they treasure. Adults who come to the faith are baptized after a time of prayer and preparation.

WHO CAN PERFORM A BAPTISM?

Normally a priest or a deacon baptizes. But Baptism matters so deeply that, in an emergency, anyone can baptize, Catholic or not, as long as they use water, say the words, and intend to do what the Church does. A parent, a nurse, or a friend at the bedside of someone in danger of death can give a true Baptism.

CAN BAPTISM BE REPEATED?

No. Because Baptism leaves a permanent mark on the soul, it is received only once and can never be repeated. This is also why the Church recognizes Baptisms performed in many other Christian churches. If there is a genuine and serious doubt about whether someone was ever truly baptized, the Church may baptize conditionally, but this is rare.

DOES THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ACCEPT OTHER CHRISTIAN BAPTISMS?

Yes. Following the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church accepts as valid any Baptism rightly given with water and the words of the Trinity, including those celebrated in many Protestant and Orthodox churches. This is one of the deepest bonds Christians share: one Lord, one faith, one Baptism (Ephesians 4:5).

Faq's

What does Baptism do for the soul?

It frees the soul from sin, fills it with God's life, makes the person a child of God and a member of the Church, and seals it with a permanent mark of belonging to Christ.

Why does the Catholic Church baptize babies?

Because Baptism is a free gift of grace, not a reward we earn. Parents bring their children to be baptized for the same reason they feed and protect them: they want to give them every good thing, beginning with the life of God.

Can anyone perform a Baptism?

In normal circumstances a priest or deacon baptizes. In an emergency, anyone can baptize, even a non-Christian, as long as they use water, say the Trinitarian words, and intend to do what the Church does.

Can you be baptized twice?

No. Baptism marks the soul permanently and is never repeated. If there is a serious doubt that a Baptism ever truly happened, the Church may baptize conditionally.

Does the Catholic Church accept Protestant Baptisms?

Yes, when they are given with natural water and the words of the Trinity. Such a Baptism is valid wherever it takes place.
